Lighting

 3 Light set-up

This setup is a very standard method of lighting for media product. Generally it is used to completely light a scene, and creators of darker genres often don’t use these 3 lights in their films. Often, with the 3 light set-up both sides of the face are lit up by the fill light and the key light, and the back light is used to define the subject’s outlines.

I am not going for this kind of tone so I have decided to use the 2 point lighting set-up instead, as it means I use more shadows and create a deeper and darker image.

2 Light set-up

The images above are from my second experiment on lighting.

The 2 light set-up refers to having 2 side or backlights on your subject (as seen in the images).

The use of these lights gives depth to an image, while also creating a darker and deeper tone. I will be primarily using this setup as it allows me to cast shadows across my subject’s faces, and therefore use a physical use of lighting to portray their personal and psychological self.

After conducting various experiments, I have decided that I will be using a large studio LED light and a smaller handheld LED light to achieve this 2 light set-up. The smaller light is really handy as it can be dimmed and it suits the vibe of my film when a colourful gel is placed on-top of it.

Stanley Kubrick – Practical Lighting

Stanley Kubrick has heavily influenced the use of practical lighting in modern film, and through this he has created a more realistic and stylistic approach to cinema. Practical light refers to using light sources in scenes that are visible within the frame that function well with the scene and image. The use of this lighting setup is both practical and realistic, and makes the audience feel more involved in the narrative. I am going to use this type of practical lighting in my film, as it will give it a more realistic, but also ominous feel. Lighting is one of the major aspects of my film, therefore getting it perfect is essential to the narrative and final outcome.
