Development
This page documents my process of development for my final Media Production. It includes experiments of different aspects of film and narrative (such as framing and first draft screenwriting), different media texts that have inspired my final narrative (including film, photographic series and journalism) and outlines of original ideas. My product will be created in a film form, therefore I am intently focusing on narrative and codes that influence me.
Brainstorming
This image below illustrates my initial thoughts for my short-film, and the basic ideas behind it. I have been greatly inspired by the film ‘A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, 2014’ and therefore I wanted to capture similar tones to the film. My basic ideas for my film can be seen in this image, such as aspects of street harassment, the discovery of a new world and reversed scenarios (a macho-male in a female’s shoes).

Narrative concepts

This production will be focused on the issue of gender based violence and consent in Australia. I will use information gathered from resources such as ‘Nomeansnoworldwide’ and personal connections to create an educated balance and support for the film. I wish to pose the question to the audience ‘Is education for young boys and girls the answer to the reduction of female violence in Australia?’. My inspiration comes from certain VICE documentaries, actions taken in countries such as Malawi and Kenya.

This short documentary will be more of an educational video that explores the world of female creators and the importance of having equality in the workplace. I’m inspired by this due to my love of film and am eager to unveil the great female producers, writers, directors etc. throughout history such as Alice Guy-Blanché, Dorothy Arzner and Lois Weber. The growth of the film industry has opened a door for female creators, and I would like to explore how this has happened and why it is so important for the door to stay open. Web-series such as Slate’s ‘Who’s Afraid of Aymann Ismail?’ will be a great influence on my project, as I am intrigued by both the style, cinematography and interviewing techniques used to portray certain subjects.

All of my concepts have undertones of female power, and criticisms of society. I want to utilise this theme in my final product, and with this possible concept, I will continue to explore such themes. I therefore am thinking of creating a short-film that follows a boy experiencing what it’s like to be a woman at night. One of my favourite films, ‘A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night’, 2014 latches onto the themes that interest me, the director also hints to Western films and plays at the supernatural genre. I want to base my film off the constant use of harassment, and through doing this I also plan to criticise the perpetrators. Using a moody, mysterious tone, I hope to give my film a certain edge to it by having the protagonist as a male macho-type character walk in the shoes of a woman.
